Greg’s Travel Notes

Day 22 – 8/3/2012

Today we traveled 445 miles and spent the entire day in Colorado traveling from Cortez, CO to Colorado Springs, CO.  Along the way we made two quite interesting stops.

The first stop was at the Mesa Verde National Park.  This is the only National Park dedicated to preserving the “works of man” rather than something in nature.  These are incredible ancestral homes of the Pueblo people from over 700 years ago.  It is amazing at how well they are preserved and the architectural details and structures used back then.

The second stop was at the newest national park, the Great Sand Dunes National Park.  These sand dunes were created by winds picking up sand from glaciers and depositing it all at one stop along the Rocky Mountains.  Just like the Grand Canyon, it is hard to describe and capture the size and expanse of these sand dunes.   I took a video trying to capture the dunes better.  You can see it at http://youtu.be/KW51M5xI8Co . You can see some people as small dots to give you some idea as to the size of the dunes.  The dunes cover 30 square miles.  We all enjoyed this stop and would have liked to stay longer.

Day 21 – 8/2/2012

Today we woke up to explore the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.  Before breakfast we walked out to Angel Point, a spot that reaches out into the canyon for some amazing views.  The vastness and beauty of the Grand Canyon is incredible and impossible to capture in a picture.

Image

Image

After breakfast, we again “encouraged” the girls to join us on a hike along the rim of the Grand Canyon.  The girls have now caught on that our “short walks” usually end up being hikes around 1.5 to 2.0 miles long, which should not be a problem.  After returning from our hike we checked out of our cabin (we again enjoyed another cabin in the National Park System) and went for a drive along the canyon.  The girls refused to get out for any more “walks” with the exception of seeing Angels Window, which is part of the canyon creating a natural bridge/window in a protrusion from the rim.

ImageImageAs we approached mid-day we headed out of the Grand Canyon National Park.  As we did we encountered an amazing storm.  It had a lot of rain and the temperature dropped to around 42 degrees (approximately 40 degrees cooler than when we left).  At one point we actually saw some snow or sleet on the edge of the road.

For the rest of the afternoon we made a mad dash across Arizona into Colorado.  The drive had a number of beautiful sights.  As we have seen in some of our previous drives in the West, it is amazing as to how far you can see.  The girls learned about how you can look across the landscape and can see rain coming down miles away.  Throughout our drive we encountered some heavy rains and witness the results of flash flooding on some roads.  Thank goodness for Rain-x!

In traveling through Arizona we managed catch a glimpse of part of the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park.  These stone formations look amazing, especially as we approached sundown and even from a distance as we drove by.

Image

Despite our quick progress, we unfortunately missed our opportunity to stand at the Four Corners National Monument, where four states come together.  Access to the monument closes at 8:00 p.m. and we did not reach it until 8:50 p.m.  We did stop to take a picture with the sign and then completed our 382 miles for the day in Cortez, CO.

One additional sight we were blessed with during the last part of our drive was watching the moon rise.  At first, because of its size, the girls refused to believe that it was the moon.  However, as we continued to drive it rose in the sky and grew brighter since it was almost a full moon.

Due to our late arrival in Cortez the girls were treated to their first late-night trip to Denny’s.  Both girls enjoyed a Value Slam breakfast for dinner

Day 20 – 8/1/2012

Today we packed in a tremendous amount of traveling (262 miles) and national park visits.  From our Cedar City, UT starting spot we travelled up to the Cedar Breaks National Park canyon, which is very similar to Bryce Canyon National Park, but not as well-known by visitors.  We enjoyed the view of the rim of the canyon at Point Supreme which is 10,350 feet above sea level.  The picture of Karen below taken by reaching up over my head to get the canyon behind her is one of my favorites from our trip so far.  We went on a short hike along the ridge of the canyon, which to our surprise was a much wooded area.  Although the girls were not thrilled to start our day with another hike, Karen and I really enjoyed the walk through the rim-side forest.  Karen continued to be our tour guide providing lots of information along the way.  We completed our hike just as a thunder storm rolled in.

Image

Image

From there we retraced our route back down and around to Cedar City due to road closures (one from a rock slide in the fall and another from mudslides in recent flash flooding).  Our next stop was part of the Zion National Park.  We once again “strongly encouraged” the girls to join us for a hike.  By this time the sun was out, the temperature was warmer, and the scenery was gorgeous.

Image

Our last stop would be for the night.  We spent the rest of the afternoon driving to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.  We were very fortunate to be able to secure a cabin in the national park just a week prior to our visit after a few calls to check on availability.  This ended up being a real benefit since it takes about 45 minutes to an hour to travel into the park.  We reached the park in late afternoon, which was a great time to travel in the park.  We stopped three times on the way in for deer to cross our path.

Our stay in the Grand Canyon National Park was in a nice little cabin.  As we quickly unpacked and headed off to our dinner reservation in the lodge we learned that Arizona does not follow daylight savings time.  Thus the hour we thought we had lost travelling today we gained back by showing up an hour early for our dinner reservation.  Fortunately we were able to get a table and have dinner as we watched the sunset over the canyon.

Image

As we explored the North Rim area a little after dinner to get a feel for the area we were blessed with a clear evening with a full moon.  It was amazing to see the bright moon shining over the canyon, quite a beautiful way to end our day.

Day 19 – 7/31/2012

After seeing a number of places and enjoying our trip out to the west coast we now have to start the rapid trip back across the country.  Today we traveled 551 miles from Santa Barbara, CA to Cedar City, UT.  The entire day was spent driving with a brief stop in Las Vegas, NV.  We wanted to show the girls the strip and give them an abbreviated taste of Las Vegas.  We spent an hour walking through the lobbies and casinos in Paris and the Bellagio.  This also gave us the opportunity to see the famous Bellagio fountain show before resuming our trip east.  Reaching Cedar City, UT prepared us for our national park visits tomorrow.

Day 18 – 7/30/2012

Ahhh.. today was the first day I did not drive at all.  We spent a relaxing day in Santa Barbara, CA with Karen’s Aunt Sue as our host.  Our day included a visit to the Santa Barbara Mission, a walk through downtown Santa Barbara to the wharf and a walk on the beach to put our feet in the Pacific Ocean.  It was a nice, slow-paced day and is the first time we spent the night in the same place for two nights in a row.

Day 17 – 7/29/2012

This morning Karen and I took a short walk on the Cambria, CA boardwalk along the Pacific Ocean.  It is beautiful but was largely hidden by the morning fog.  As a family we then headed down Route 1 to take a tour of Hearst Castle, the former home of William Randolph Hearst.  It is an amazing residence and story of its construction with all of the ceilings, fireplaces and artwork purchased and moved over from Europe.  And to think it was never finished to his vision!

After our tour, a walk around the grounds, and a quick lunch along the shore we traveled the remaining 141 miles down the coast to Santa Barbara, CA to visit Karen’s Aunt Sue.  This will be our turn around point after travelling 4,702 miles.  In evening we enjoyed a home cooked meal and a relaxing evening watching the Olympics.

Day 16 – 7/28/2012

This morning we enjoyed some more time with our friends Jon and Tandy as we walked through the Henry Cowell State Park to see some amazing redwood trees.  The trees are absolutely spectacular.  It is amazing to see how large they are.  The slice of Redwood behind us in the picture below dates back to the birth of Jesus Christ.  You will see in the picture that Lindsey was having a rough morning.

Image

After our walk through the Redwoods we headed south along the California coast.  The weather continued to be relatively cool as the marine layer of fog hugged the coastline.  As an adventure along our way we took a couple of hours to go kayaking.  We split up into two person kayaks and traveled about two miles in the Elkhorn Slough in Monterey Bay.  We made the mistake of putting Kelsey with Karen, so Karen had a lot of paddling to do.  Lindsey was a natural kayaker and did very well paddling.  During our adventure we had close encounters with sea lions, sea otters, pelicans and other sea birds.  One sea lion emerged right in front of my kayak and scared Lindsey.  Although it was a tiring trip (especially paddling back while the tide was coming in) we really enjoyed it.

ImageThe quote for today was from Kelsey.  While she was kayaking she asked Karen, “Why aren’t we going faster?”  The answer was that they would go faster if she started paddling!

The rest of the afternoon we spent traveling down route 1 along the coast.  It is a beautiful drive and so interesting to see how the west coastline is so different from the east coast.  After traveling 161 miles we stopped for the night at a nice Best Western right on the ocean in Cambria, CA.  This is a very cute little town and is on our list for Karen and I to return to someday.  Unfortunately due to our evening arrival and the marine layer fog in the mroning, we could not enjoy the ocean view as much as we would have liked. Cambria has a cute little town and a boardwalk along the shoreline.

Day 15 – 7/27/2012

Image

We spent the morning touring and enjoying some sites with Karen’s cousins Brad and Jessica and Jessica’s husband, Jeff.  We started at the dahlia garden in the Golden Gate Park and then walked over to the Academy of Sciences, which is located within the park.  They have an interesting exhibit about the movement of the earth’s plates, which discusses the evolution of ostriches and the frequent experiences of earthquakes on the west coast.  Kelsey and Lindsey loved seeing the live baby ostriches on display.  The Academy also had a really neat, fully enclosed rainforest exhibit with a number of butterflies and birds flying around.  To keep them in you have to enter the exhibit through an air lock.

Image

For lunch we satisfied our desire for sourdough bread by traveling down to Fisherman’s Wharf to have lunch at the Boudin Bakery.  The Boudin Bakery has been making sourdough bread since 1849 and is still baking sourdough bread off of the same “mother dough” starter.  The bread was delicious.  We spent some time after our lunch touring the Boudin museum and bakery.

From the wharf we bid farewell to San Francisco and headed down the coast on route 1.  Unfortunately much of the coast line had the summer fog, but we did see some amazing views.  We traveled to Santa Cruz to meet up with some family friends, Jon and Tandy, who live there.  We met them for dinner on the Santa Cruz wharf and then walked the boardwalk.  While we walked we could hear the summer boardwalk concert featuring two ‘80’s groups: Animotion and Flock of Seagulls.  Although the swings ride closed before we got there, Kelsey and Lindsey enjoyed a couple of other rides.

Day 14 – 7/26/2012

Today we did not drive much.  We moved from our hotel in South San Francisco to downtown San Francisco.  On the way in to the city we stopped by Twin Peaks Park, a nice hilltop park outside the city that allows you to see most of the city and the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges.  Even though there was the usual morning fog over part of the city, it was still neat to see the city from this high point.  From there we traveled to Lombard Street where we introduced the girls to the hilly streets of San Francisco. It was the first of our stops in our tourist “must see” places in San Francisco.

Image

ImageWe then dropped off our minivan and luggage at our downtown hotel and headed out on foot.  From the Strauss Square (as in Levi Strauss) we traveled up 447 steps to the Coit Tower.  Various stairways lead up a hillside in between very interesting cottages and houses with beautiful gardens.  Once at the top we had a great view of the Bay Bridge, the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz.

From the Coit Tower we descended into the Italian part of the city for some lunch.  We stopped by a café where they serve breakfast until 4:00 p.m.  Kelsey had what she claims were the best pancakes she has ever had.  The rest of us enjoyed more Italian menu items.  This was our first stop in what turned out to be a very international eating tour of San Francisco.

Our next stop was Pier 39, the spot which has become an annual stopping point for migrating sea lions.  We enjoyed watching them sleeping in the sun.  Continuing our eating tour of San Francisco we walked to Ghirardelli Square for a walk through the Ghirardelli Chocolate store and a sampling of their delicious hot fudge on ice cream sundaes.

What would a trip to San Francisco be without a ride on a cable car?  For us, it would not have been a complete trip, so we hopped in line to board a cable car up to Chinatown.  Kelsey and Lindsey were thrilled to get a couple of spaces on the outside of the cable car while Karen and I sat on a bench looking out.

Once in Chinatown we tracked down the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Company where we could sample free cookie imperfections and purchase a bag of assorted fortune cookies to take with us.  As the afternoon turned cooler we stopped by a Chinese tea store for cups of hot tea.  The girls really enjoyed the Dragon Eye tea.

One thing that has surprised us is how cool the weather has been.  After leaving the heat on the east coast, we were looking forward to cooler weather in Yellowstone and with the fog in San Francisco.  However, the temperature has stayed cooler than our expectations.

Image

We continued our international eating when we met Karen’s cousin Jessica and her husband Jeff for dinner.  Both of them work in the city, so they agreed to meet us for dinner.  We decided on having dinner at a German “beer hall” type restaurant.  We had an enjoyable meal and a good mug of German beer.

Quote of the day:  During our walk we passed a gallery that had a sign about the death of the artist, LeRoy Neiman.  This led to a discussion with us listing the various euphemisms for death, like “passed on,” “kicked the bucket,” “dirt nap,” and “bought the farm.”  Then Lindsey added, “Cut the Cheese.”  Hmmm, not quite Lindsey.  I know this is silly, but we found it very funny and still laugh when we think about it.

Day 13 – 7/25/2012

Today we officially reached the west coast by entering California.  We covered 295 miles as we made our way from Sparks, NV (just outside Reno, NV) to San Francisco, CA.  As we approach the midway point, our trip has taken us a total of 4,278 miles so far.

On our way to San Francisco we stopped in Pleasanton, CA to visit my second cousin, Bridget, her husband Rich and their two adorable children Elliot and Lillian.  They recently moved to California from northern Virginia.  This was a great opportunity for us to see and catch up with them.

Image

Our next stop was at Stanford University.  Karen’s brother Scott attended Stanford for his graduate degrees.  Fortunately for us, his former officemate Laura offered to give us a quick tour of the campus.  We enjoyed the opportunity to see this beautiful campus.

Image

Our last stop for the evening was a visit with Karen’s cousins Brad and Jessica and Jessica’s husband Jeff.  We had an enjoyable visit, dinner and walk around their neighborhood.

Instead of a quote for the day I have a song of the day.  As we were getting ready for the day in our hotel room the girls were watching some tv.  They saw a commercial for a show with animated potatoes singing about “potato love.”  This song was stuck in our heads all day and has been our way to make Kelsey or Lindsey laugh and for the girls to irritate their mother.  You can get a taste of the song on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hw6QVTs59yY .  WARNING!! This song will stick in your head.
