We woke up in our adorable cottage and went to have breakfast at the lodge near where we were staying.  Then, we went on a couple hikes in the Badlands.  The first hike was pretty short but the second one was really cool.  We walked through the Badlands on a path but then we had to climb up a really high ladder to the higher area.  After walking a long distance up there we finally got to a lookout.  It was really cool!  We took a lot of cool pictures along the way but see the slideshow to see just a few.

After being so hot for so long during the hike we went to the air conditioned visitor’s center and watched a video to cool off.  It was kind of interesting but a little boring.  Lindsey said that it felt like she was in science class..

On the way out of the Badlands we saw some really cool animals.  First we saw a herd of buffalo and one was very close to the car!  Next,  we went to a place that had a bunch of prairie dogs.  They are so cute!  See the slideshow to see some pictures.

Next, we drove to Custer State Park (still in South Dakota, who knew there was so much stuff here?).  We stayed in a room in another lodge style hotel but it wasn’t nearly as nice as our cottage that we stayed in the day before.

After we got to the hotel we drove to Mount Rushmore to have dinner.   We saw Mt. Rushmore and took lots of pictures.  We even went on a short hike near it.  After this we had dinner at the café there.  Lindsey and I had Presidential Root Beer!  After this we watched a video about Mt. Rushmore at the outdoor amphitheater and saw the monument lit up at night.

Today we did a lot of driving.  When we woke up we played with the puppies some more and had breakfast.  Then, we had breakfast and started driving.  After a little while we had to pull over because we ran out of gas.  We had to wait for a while for a pig farmer to come give us some gas.  I mean, it’s not an adventure if you don’t run out of gas in the middle of nowhere!  After we filled up on gas we stopped at the Corn Palace in South Dakota.   This is a building that is decorated on the outside with corn.  It’s kind of weird.  My mom said to “embrace the cheese” because it is so cheesy but I think we should really embrace the corn because it is so corny!  I got my picture taken with a corn guy:

Next, we went to the hotel in the Badlands.  We had our own free-standing cottage  that was so cute and homey.  All the furniture and walls were made of unfinished wood so it still felt like you were living in a cabin.  The cottages are brand new so they have all modern appliances like a microwave, refrigerator, nice bathroom, TV, and air conditioning.   I just LOVED the cottage.  It was nice to sit out on the porch in the morning and read a book while you watch the sun rise over the beautiful rocks.

After we got settled in our cottage, we went to Wall, South Dakota.  We walked through Wall Drug and had dinner at the Wall Drug Café.  I even got my free ice water!  Here are a few pictures:

After dinner we got chocolate dipped ice cream at DQ. Mmmmmmmmmmmm!

Day 5 – 7/17/2012

Today was a long travel day (we covered 633 miles through Minnesota and South Dakota) and our theme for the day was “Embrace the Cheese!”  We chose this slogan after our first “cheesy” stop at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD.  Kelsey thought we should change it to “Embrace the Corn!” since the first stop was so “corny.”  However, our final stop of the day was at Wall Drug in Wall, SD.  This was a very cheesy, touristy stop, but we had to eat dinner somewhere.  This is an amazing marketing story of creating a huge tourist stop just from the idea of offering “Free Ice Water.”  We saw the first billboard for Wall Drug announcing it was only 355 miles away

This morning we left Ham Lake, MN (a little north of Minneapolis) from our friend Kate’s house a little later than we planned due to Kelsey and Lindsey having a difficult time tearing themselves away from Kate and her adorable 10 week old puppies Bella and Mitt Romney.  I am sure you will see pictures in Kelsey’s post.

One thing I enjoyed over the last few days of driving is listening to some good music.  I do not know if parts of the mid-west are stuck in the 1980’s and 1990’s or if they just have good taste in music, but we have found some great radio stations to listen to.  The sad part is that most of them refer to this period as “classic rock.”  In between stations we to listen to audiobooks.  Today we started to listen as a family to The Hunger Games.

If our day of driving was not long enough already, I unfortunately made it longer by not keeping an eye on the gas gauge.  We ran out of gas in between exits that had gas stations.  By the time I realized we were getting low it was too far to the next exit.  Thank goodness for AAA and the nice gentleman who is a pig farmer and tow truck driver who was only an exit away at the local county fair with his daughter showing some pigs when our call for assistance reached him.  Fortunately we only needed to wait less than 30 minutes for him to arrive.

The weather continues to be hot along the way.  The car thermometer reached 101 degrees at one point this afternoon.  We ended our day by arriving at the Cedar Pass Lodge in the Badlands National Park.  The lodging consists of these very nice ,newly-built, modern cottages.  They are a little bigger than the shed in my backyard with a full bathroom and a nice porch and chairs to look at the scenery.  Both girls have said that they would love to live in one of these.  We would highly recommend staying here if you are ever in these here parts.

I would like to end with my favorite quote from the day.  As we were driving in the Badlands Lindsey stated, “These rocks are blocking my signal.”  Being out here in the park without a “signal” and lights last night was a fantastic experience as we gazed up at an amazing amount of stars without any lights nearby.  We look forward to seeing more of nature’s beauty without a signal.

7-16-12

Today we left Wisconsin to drive to Minnesota.   But first, we stopped in Hammond, Wisconsin.  It was a lot smaller (population 1,600) and nicer than Hammond, Indiana so we stopped in to take pictures.  I really wanted to stop at the Hammond Disposal Plant but we didn’t have enough time and it was out of the way.  But, we did stop at the Hammond Golf Club.  Sadly, they didn’t have any hats or anything that dad could get.

After this stop we stopped at an A&W restaurant for lunch.  The root beer was fantabulous!  It was also very fun to pick music from the jukebox!  Lindsey had fun figuring out how to work it.  The food was pretty good but the whole experience was really awesome!

Next, we went to the Mall of America.  It was pretty cool but it was sort of underwhelming.  I mean, I thought it would  be a lot bigger than it actually was.   It was cool that there were rides in the middle of the mall but it didn’t seem that much bigger than the mall near us is.  Also, most of the stores there we could get to really easily from our house.

After walking around the mall for a while and doing some shopping we got back in the car and drove to our family friend’s house for dinner with her and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Loyd.  Kate just got married and is about to have a baby so we were happy that we got to see her, her nice new house, and her three adorable puppies!  Lindsey and I had so much fun playing with Bella, Cowboy, and Mitt Romney!  They were so cute!  The only thing that was disappointing was not getting to see Kate’s new husband, Tony because he was away on a business trip.  But, we can’t wait to meet him next time we see them!  Plus, next time we see them there will be a new addition to the family!  Lindsey and I even got to help pick out the cutest outfit for their baby girl to wear on the way home from the hospital.  It has lady bugs on it and even a matching lady bug hat!  I can’t wait to see pictures of the new baby!

Here is a picture of Kate, Mom, Lindsey, and Me:

Here are some pictures of the dogs:

In order of picture they are Bella, Mitt Romney and me, and Bella and me.  We didn’t get any pictures of Cowboy because he was a little crazy. 🙂

Day 4 – 7/16/2012

Today is the day we crossed West of the Mississippi River as we traveled from Madison, WI to Minneapolis, MN.  We covered another 316 miles, so now we are 1,515 miles from home.

As we were traveling along we were surprised to find Hammond, WI, just before the Minnesota border.  Of course we had to stop, take a look around, and take a few pictures.

Image

This afternoon we walked for close to a mile by walking around the Mall of America.  The girls enjoyed shopping, but Karen and I were in agreement that we were not as impressed as we thought we would be.  The Mall of America is large; it is a half mile to walk around one level of the Mall and has a fairly large amusement park with a log flume and several roller coasters in the middle, however, most of the stores are all of the same ones we can find at various malls in Connecticut.  We would recommend skipping the Mall of America if you ever travel to Minneapolis.

This evening we are visiting a good family friend, Kate.  Several years ago she worked as the Youth Director at our church before moving back to Minnesota.  We have enjoyed the opportunity to catch up with her and her parents during our trip.

7-15-12

We went through four states today!  It was not super eventful but still a ton of fun!  I mean, who doesn’t love quality time with your family in the car?  Anyway, we left the Goliks and drove to Chicago, Illinois to see some of my parents’ friends and have lunch.  Along the way we just HAD to stop by Hammond, Indiana and take some pictures.  See my dad’s post to see the picture of the Hammond Pest control.

Then, we went to the Kohl’s house in Chicago.  We hit some traffic on our way into Chicago so we had a late lunch with them.  While in Chicago we just had to try the deep dish pizza!  But the pizza wasn’t the only exciting thing at the Kohl’s house.  They also have a very cute two year old boy named Amanuel who loved to entertain and who was not shy at all!  The first thing he did when we walked in the door was take our hands and take us to see the trains that he was playing with.  He loved to make funny faces and make us laugh.  Here are a few totally cute pictures:

Next we drove to our hotel in Madison, Wisconsin.  Lindsey and I approved of the décor.  It was very clean and new.  We walked down State Street and had dinner at The Old Fashioned.  It was pretty good but I did not like the cheese curds.  After dinner, we went back to the hotel and had a late night swim- very refreshing!

Day 3 – 7/15/2012

Today was mostly a travel day.  We left Avon, OH this morning and drove to Chicago, IL where we visited and had lunch with Kevin, one of my best friends from high school, his wife Christina and one of the cutest two-year old we know, Amanuel.  We had a very enjoyable visit with them, complete with deep dish pizza for lunch!  One nice surprise in getting to Chicago is that we picked up an hour, so we ended up arriving earlier than we originally thought.  Unfortunately the traffic around Chicago devoured most of the hour we gained.

Along the way to Chicago we did make one stop.  How could we pass by Hammond, IN?

From Chicago we travelled to Madison, WI, completing our 505 miles for the day.  This evening we walked along State Street in Madison and enjoyed a taste of Wisconsin at The Old Fashioned.

Over the last three days we have learned a few things about traveling with electronics:

  1. it is important for everyone to make sure everyone packs their recharging cord after using each day (we left one in our hotel room in Niagara Falls).
  2. If you lose a charging cord, ask for one at the front desk of the next hotel.  They usually have a collection of cords to offer you.
  3. We are big fans of Verizon’s MiFi.  This little wireless device allows up to 5 wireless devices to connect to the internet using this wireless hotspot.  The MiFi plus my laptop computer has allowed us to work on our blog and search for restaurants and destinations while traveling in the minivan.
  4. Pack a power strip when traveling with multiple family members who all need to charge their cellphones and other electronics.  Hotel rooms are not filled with easily available outlets.  By having all of the charging items in one location it also prevents charge cords from being left behind.

7-14-12

Today when I woke up I had cereal out of a cup from our hotel room and then Mom brought Lindsey and I cinnamon buns with tons of frosting from Tim Horton’s.  It was sooooo delicious!  Then, we got up and went to the water park that was in the hotel.  There were four water slides.  On two of them you had to go down on inner tubes so Lindsey and I sometimes went on double inner tubes.  I also went down with Mom and Dad a few times.  Also, there was a wave pool and a hot tub.  We spent over an hour there and had tons of fun!

After showering and packing up our hotel room we went to get tickets to ride on the Maid of the Mist.  The Maid of the Mist is a boat that goes so close to Niagara Falls that you can feel the mist!  The waterfalls are so much more beautiful up close!  Also, the mist was very refreshing on such a hot day!  See my dad’s post to see a picture of us in our VERY fashionable rain ponchos that they gave us so we could stay relatively dry.

After going on this tour we were very hungry! So, we decided to have lunch at Kelsey’s.  The food there was only okay but I did love the name of the restaurant (I mean, how could you not?).  My mom asked the waitress if they had any t-shirts that we could get because it would be cool for me to get a t-shirt with my name on it.  Sadly, they didn’t have any souvenirs like that for sale.  But, the waitress did bring me a glass that says Kelsey’s on it!  It is so cool!  I love having a glass that says my name!  This pretty much made my day.

After all this excitement we drove for about four hours to our friends, the Goliks, house.  They had just gotten home from a vacation about an hour before we did so we just had hot dogs and hamburgers for dinner.  This was good by me!  After dinner Lindsey and I had the option of sleeping down in the basement with the three Golik boys or sleeping upstairs in real beds.  We chose the slightly safer option of sleeping upstairs so that we wouldn’t wake up the boys when we woke up early the next day.  That night I fell right asleep because I was exhausted from the day’s events!  Here is a picture of us with the Goliks:

Day 2 – 7/14/2012

Today we started our day by enjoying the small water park at the hotel we were staying at, the Americana.  Karen and I found the room to be relative small and dated, but the girls had a tremendous amount of fun at the water park.  We spent a little over an hour enjoying the two body slides and the two tube slides before we needed to check out.

After leaving the hotel we returned to the main tourist area, Clifton Hill, in Niagara Falls to see the Falls in the daylight and to take a trip on the Maid of the Mist.  The sun was quite warm, especially after we put on our blue ponchos, so we really enjoyed the temporary cooling of the mist from the Falls.

After our misty experience we took a break for lunch at a restaurant called Kelsey’s before heading back to the U.S.A.  Our next stop was Avon, OH (just west of Cleveland) to visit our good friends the Goliks.  Today we covered another 245 miles.

Day 1 – 7/13/2012

Sorry for the delay in this post.  Our hotel in Niagara Falls had very limited wifi available.

Day 1 – 7/13/2012

Today we started off on our cross-country trip.  We managed to keep our packing to a very reasonable amount in the back of our minivan.  We will see if our “system” works over the next few weeks.

We covered 442 miles in our first day with our first stop in West Seneca, NY (just outside of Buffalo) to visit my grandfather who will be 90 next month.  We had a nice visit and dinner with him before heading to Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada.  Our girls were excited to make the trip into another country and use their new passports.  I am not sure what the girls had originally envisioned, but they were surprised that Canada, at least the region by Niagara Falls, looked a lot like the U.S. and the weather did not turn dramatically cooler when we crossed the border.

One of the funny things that happened today was as I was driving today Karen decided to take a little nap since she was up late last night with the last of the packing and house cleaning.  She brought along a face mask to be able to shut out the sunshine.  After she had dozed off I heard Lindsey yell, “Mom, Mom, Are you asleep?”  Really Lindsey?

This evening we enjoyed fireworks over the Falls.  It is amazing how the Canadian side has developed into a kiddie version of Las Vegas with all of the lights and attractions with mostly arcades instead of casinos, although there are casinos as well.   Kelsey and Lindsey enjoyed seeing the Falls at night.  After looking at the Falls Kelsey said, “I could watch the Falls forever.”

We had a very enjoyable start to our trip.
